Audi A4 / Q5 backup camera not working — or never had one

Camera, wiring or fuse when it fails; a $399.95 plug-in interface with camera when the car never had one.

The short answer: if your Audi has a reversing camera and the screen stays blank or freezes in reverse, the usual causes are the camera itself, its wiring through the trunk lid, or a fuse — and a replacement trunk-handle camera is $45.95. "Backup camera not working" is one of the most searched Audi A4 and Q5 problems for the 2010–2016 cars, and "add a backup camera" is right behind it. Both end at the same trunk handle. Here is how to tell which situation you are in and what fixes it.

Situation 1 — the car has a camera and it stopped working

Symptoms owners describe: the screen shows black or "camera not available" in reverse, the picture flickers, or it works only some of the time.

The camera. Factory trunk-handle cameras live in the wettest spot on the car. Water in the housing, a fogged lens or a failed sensor produce a black or milky picture. If the guidance lines appear but the image does not, the camera is the first suspect.
The wiring. The cable runs through the trunk-lid hinge and flexes every time the lid opens. A broken conductor gives an intermittent picture that comes and goes with the lid.
The fuse. If the screen does not switch to the camera view at all, check the fuse before anything else. The location differs by model; the owner's manual lists it.

Situation 2 — the car never had a camera

Most A4, A5 and Q5 built 2009–2013 left the factory without a camera, and base trims without one right through 2016. The radio has no camera input, so a camera alone does nothing — an interface has to put the picture on the screen.

Situation 3 — you want CarPlay as well
